Mac Webmaster Resources
Of course, right up front, I have to say the best sources of information for Mac webmasters, based on extensive, unbiased analysis consisting of asking my wife, are my Mac Web Servers columns, formerly published at MacCentral. But if you need more information to get started, here are some alternative sources. --Dave
Books and Magazines
- AppleScript for the Internet: Visual Quickstart Guide (Peachpit Press, 1998) by Ethan Wilde
-- A well-reviewed AppleScript book both for general and Internet-specific scripting.- Mac OS 8 Web Server Cookbook (Prentice Hall/PTR, 1998) by David Hart and Phil Bourne
-- And you thought I wouldn't mention this book? Possibly the greatest thing since sliced bread. It covers Web, ftp, e-mail, and mailing list serving -- just like this Web site!- MacPerl: Power and Ease (Prime Time Freeware, 1998) by Vicki Brown and Chris Nandor
-- A book for Perl programmers of all levels on the Mac port of the Web's most popular language for CGI scripting.- Providing Internet Services via the Mac OS (Addison-Wesley, 1996) by Carl Steadman, Jason Snell, Peter N. Lewis.
- Web Techniques -- A monthly source for tips and trends in the Web world. Plus, subscriptions are free.
- Webmaster Macintosh (AP Professional, 1997) by Bob Levitus and Jeff Evans.
Web Sites
- Mac OS Web Server Cookbook -- Again, you're surprised? You are here!
- Mac Web Developer -- Another regularly updated site provided by Hutman Interactive.
- Pure-Mac -- One of my new favorite sites for finding pointers to all types of software.
- MacWebserver.com -- If you want your site served from a Mac, this site will point you to hundreds of Mac Web hosting companies and services.
Mailing Lists
- NetProLive mailing list -- This moderated list, hosted by Xplain Corporation, publishers of MacTech and the now-defunct Net Professional magazine, is a good source of press releases from the movers and shakers in the Mac Web and networking community. To subscribe, send a message to listserv@listmail.xplain.com with "subscribe NetProLive" in the message body.
- Mac-webmasters mailing list -- Hosted by MacWebsite.com, the mac-webmasters list still works, even if the Web site itself has seen better days. Traffic isn't busy, but questions always get useful responses. Send a message to mac-webmasters-request@macconnect.com with "subscribe" in the message body.
- Macweb-developer mailing list -- Hosted by the Mac Web developer site, this list hasn't had much activity since I joined recently. Send a message to requests@macweb-developer.com with "subscribe talklist" in the message body.
